On March 29, 2022, Heartland hosted a panel discussion titled “Ukraine & UN Guiding Principle 7: The War, Its Aftermath, and Responsible Investor Stewardship” at the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility’s Spring Conference.
The session provided participants with a practical primer on the escalating crisis in Ukraine. Panelists discussed how investors can meet their obligations under UN Guiding Principle 7 to conduct enhanced human rights due diligence in conflict-affected areas like Ukraine. They also examined the human rights risks and due diligence requirements related to information and communication technology companies—an industry with significant exposure to human rights violations in conflict zones. Most importantly, the panel explored emerging efforts to engage companies within this sector.
Sam Jones and Rich Stazinski of Heartland were joined by Sonia Kowal (President of Zevin Asset Management), and Isedua Oribhabor (Business & Human Rights Lead at Access Now).
